Rothschild, 65, was recently relieved of his duties as the Yankees’ pitching coach after nine seasons in the Bronx. New York was known during Rothschild’s tenure as an early adopter of analytics and high-speed cameras for its pitchers, and the club’s staff finished with a better-than-league-average ERA in each of the last four seasons.

Rothschild had a year left on his contract with the Yanks before they let him go, though general manager Brian Cashman stated specifically that he did not believe the club’s pitching was to blame for the pintstripes’ American League Championship Series loss to the Astros. Rothschild previously worked with the Reds, Braves and Marlins in various coaching positions before managing the expansion Devil Rays through 2001. He then continued as a consultant for the Marlins and then as pitching coach for the Cubs before the Yankees hired him as pitching coach under manager Joe Girardi in 2011.

Rothschild will replace Darren Balsley in San Diego as new Padres manager Jayce Tingler assembles his coaching staff.
