BN GRID is Breakn News' NFL team-strength rating system. Positive values indicate stronger-than-average teams, while negative values indicate weaker-than-average teams. This twice-weekly report compares the current ratings with the previous report baseline and focuses on the largest moves across the entire 32-team table.

Why Carolina did not fall sharply after losing to Cleveland

Carolina's loss in Cleveland is a useful example of how GRID differs from a standings table. Carolina was about No. 21 at -1.62 entering the matchup and is now No. 20 at -1.77. Cleveland's GRID rating improved after the 21-18 win, even though its table rank can still be affected by movement elsewhere in the league.

The drop was modest because the game itself was close and V7 had the pregame margin at only 0.09 points. A three-point result was therefore not a large surprise relative to the pregame expectation. Carolina also entered the game with fresh positive evidence from its 34-3 victory over Atlanta the previous week. GRID reacts to the new result, but it does not let one close loss erase the broader body of recent performance.

How to read the movement

GRID is not a standings table. A win does not automatically cause a large rise and a loss does not automatically cause a large fall. The size of a move depends on the team's prior rating, the quality and closeness of the result, opponent context, and the rest of the team's recent body of work. Movement by other teams can also change a club's rank even when its own GRID rating improves.
